Anchorage Information

Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city and constitutes more than 40 percent of the entire population for the state. Although Juneau is the official state capital of Alaska, there are actually more state employees who reside in the Anchorage area (including current Governor Sarah Palin). Anchorage has been named an All-America City four times, in 1956, 1965, 1984/85, and in 2002, by the National Civic League.

The largest economic in Anchorage include: transportation, military, government, tourism, and resource extraction. Anchorage's geographical location and surrounding natural resources account for large portions of the local economy.

Anchorage's economy traditionally has been more stable than the rest of the country. Its growth has been steady, though not as rapid as other cities in the U.S. On the other hand, foreclosures and other economic downturns have not been as severe.

Anchorage's location along "great circle" routes between Asia and the lower 48 states enables its airport (The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport) to be one of the busiest airports in terms of cargo traffic. One big benefit is the airport’s abundant supply of jet fuel, which comes from refineries in the North Pole, Alaska, or Kenai, Alaska. This jet fuel is transported to the Port of Anchorage either by rail by pipeline to the airport.

Each year, many tourists are drawn to Alaska, and Anchorage is often the first stop. From there, they head south to popular fishing locations on the Kenai Peninsula or north to locations such as Denali National Park and Fairbanks. The economic impact of tourism and conventions in Anchorage totals about $150 million annually. However, the most visible industry would be Petroleum, with many high rises bearing the logos of large multinationals such as BP and Conoco Phillips.
